WIMBORNE edged closer to a dream Twickenham final by winning their second trophy of a highly successful season.

The in-form All Blacks claimed Southern Counties Intermediate Cup glory with a 25-20 victory at Wallingford on Saturday.

That saw the Minstermen add to the Dorset & Wilts knockout title they won earlier in the campaign.

It also enabled Wimborne to set up a trip to St Austell in the South West Intermediate Cup final on February 23.

The victors of that clash will then move to within one win of playing at English rugby’s historic headquarters.

Speaking after the success at Wallingford, Wimborne team manager Mark Sturney said: “The conditions were very heavy and, at times, we found it difficult to get the rhythm to our game. I take off my hat to all the guys out there for giving us a thrilling game under some testing conditions.

“It was great to see so many people on the sidelines cheering us on.

“Our support outnumbered the home supporters and certainly gave the team a boost.”

Tom Moysey was again the star of the show as he registered 15 points to help Wimborne secure their latest triumph.

Wallingford established a six-point lead through two penalty goals before Moysey replied with a three-pointer of his own.

The young star then scored a try as he chipped over the defence and hacked on before outpacing the covering wing to touch down out wide.

Wallingford led 13-8 at the interval after a converted effort before the break but the Minstermen dominated possession early in the second period.

The Dorset outfit were rewarded when Ben Hunt burst through and offloaded to Paul Watson to score a try under the posts, which Moysey converted.

Centre Will Tarbard showed his strength to force his way over with Moysey again adding the extras to put Wimborne in charge.

Moysey slotted another penalty before Wallingford set up a tense finale with a converted try.

However, Wimborne stood firm to book their trip to Cornwall and earn the chance of a memorable cup hat-trick.
