DORSET prospect Lynnlette Aung gave top seed Liz Cann a fright before bowing out of the English National Champion-ships in Manchester.

The 16-year-old Talbot Heath student was leading 18-13 in the second set against the defending champion and five-time winner.

But a late rally from the Commonwealth bronze medallist saw her add a 21-19 success to her 21-15 first-set win for an overall 2-0 victory.

Despite the loss, it was a marked improvement for the Bournemouth teenager who lost 21-9, 21-6 to Cann in the first round of last year’s competition.

Aung won her first-round match 22-20, 21-16 against Lucy Mason, and reached the same stage in the doubles with playing partner Jessica Hopton.

The pair looked set to reach the quarter-finals after winning the first set 21-14, before Hopton was hampered by an injury. They lost the next two sets 23-21, 21-8.

Cann, meanwhile, also suffered an injury in her bid to win a sixth title. She had to retire from her quarter-final with eventual runner-up Fontaine Chapman.

Aung, who competed in last month’s Australian Youth Olympic Festival in Sydney, lines up in the under-17 tournament at Cheltenham this weekend.
