Bournemouth Under-16s have qualified for the Ageas Bowl finals day as league champions.

The Chapel Gate outfit secured the title with two comprehensive victories on Sunday night.

The young Lions shrugged off last week’s final-ball defeat to ease their way into a semi-final spot which will see them take on Spin Cricket on Easter Sunday.

Bournemouth began the penultimate evening of games with a well-controlled performance against Isle of Wight, in which the Lions opened the bowling for the first time this season.

They restricted their opponents to 91 all out with Rob Pack, Carlos Snell and Gareth Davies sharing the wickets.

In reply, Lions never looked fazed and a seventh consecutive retirement from captain Harry Weal took them over the line for the loss of just a single wicket.

In the final game of the night, Bournemouth were once again asked to bowl first.

After a slow start in the field, the south coast side took control with some quick wickets and outstanding fielding. Weal showed he’s not just a batsman with a string of superb catches to help restrict New Forest to just 71.

Bournemouth returned to the crease knowing a win would take them to the top of the table, but the first four runs were the most important for them as Weal needed just a boundary to become leading run scorer.

This came on the same night that Pack became the leading bowler with another four wickets, giving Bournemouth the two individual awards And the Lions will now go into the weekend’s finals showdown as favourites to win the team trophy.
