Canford Magna’s Paul Jones won for the first time for ten months by recording the only sub-par round in the Henry Howard Finance-sponsored St Pierre pro-am.

His two-under 70 left him two shots clear of Welsh pair Richard Brookman (Creigiau) and James Maxwell (Trefloyne). He started with birdies at the third, fifth and seventh before making his only mistake at the ninth where he dropped two shots.

But he was quickly back on track on a day when crosswinds added to the difficulties over the former European Tour lay out in Wales. He made further birdies at the tenth and 12th. Another followed at the 17th but dropped shots at the 16th and 18th pegged him back again. Jones also led the team of Charlie Heaven, Sam Loyd and John Price into second place in the team event.

It completed a successful few days for the 36-year-old one-club man as he was runner-up to Sion Bebb (Vale Hotel) at Sherborne and collected more than £1,000 for two days work.

Jones finished one shot behind on a breezy day. He bogeyed the fifth but went on to become the day’s the birdie king with nine that included an incredible run of six in succession from the sixth. But then his chances of winning waned after a double bogey at the par four 12th.

Bournemouth Alliance player Michael Watson (Wessex Golf Centre) was third on four-under 68. Graham Howell (Ferndown Forest), 71, was eighth and Mark Wiggett (Dudsbury) , 72, ninth.

Lee Thompson (Dudsbury) was seventh at St Pierre on 75 with Wiggett and Watson one shot further back at St Pierre.
