POOLE’S Olympic star Lucy Macgregor again demonstrated her world-class qualities by winning the first fixture of the inaugural 2013 Women’s International Match Racing Series.
Macgregor, who competed alongside Annie Lush and sister Kate Macgregor in the match racing class at London 2012, defeated Julie Bossard in the finals of the event in Saint Quay, France.
The 26-year-old, sailing with new team-mates Saskia Clark, Claire Lasko and Maria Stanley, won no fewer than 24 of her 29 contests during the ISAF grade one Saint Quay women’s match racing showpiece.
Former world number one Macgregor said: “We are quite a new team but we started working together really well, and the boat handling got us out of a few tight situations. Our starts were really good and that helped.
“There were a lot of gains and losses and a few calls downwind, so you had to have at least five boat lengths to feel a little comfortable. With the short wind shifts, it was very important to cover.”
The Women’s International Match Racing Series is a professional sailing circuit, hosted by the Women’s International Match Racing Association.
Meanwhile, Macgregor has set her sights on a place at the Rio 2016 Games in the new Olympic catamaran class, with match racing dropped from the programme.
She has decided to try for the Team GBR berth in the Nacra 17 class, which is a mixed male/female crewed event. Since October, Macgregor has been sailing with Tom Phipps, a double ISAF Youth champion.
