FORMER captain Giles Legg took the stroke play honours at this year’s county championships at Came Down.
Last year’s skipper carded two rounds of 72 to win the Garrett Salver for the first time and qualify for the match play phase in top spot.
Legg’s four-over par total was matched by Weymouth’s Tom Robson who carded the top score of the morning with a level-par 70.
But Robson fell away in the afternoon with a 74, for Legg to win with a better second round.
Legg also picked up the mid-amateur Sika Trophy.
In the battle for the county crown, however, Legg (Ferndown) was beaten at the first hurdle by Parkstone’s Dean Barnes who claimed a one-hole success.
Barnes, a former Europro tournament winner, went out in the next round when he lost at the first extra hole to Aaron Crabb (Yeovil).
Crabb went from strength to strength, notching up seven birdies to topple Dudsbury’s Ben Churchill 6 & 4 in the semi-final.
In the final, Crabb overcame two-time winner and current captain David Cook at the second extra hole to become the 2013 county champion.
