CHERRIES manager Eddie Howe has welcomed increased competition for places in defence following the arrival of Elliott Ward.
The 28-year-old, who joined Cherries this week following his release by Norwich, has a wealth of experience in the Championship and has also featured in the Premier League.
Ward's arrival will significantly bolster Cherries' resources - with Tommy Elphick and Steve Cook arguably having formed the best central defensive partnership in League One last season.
Howe told the Daily Echo: “Competition has to be fierce in every position. The centre-halves we had last season were outstanding for us but it was certainly an area where we needed greater strength in depth.
“Last season, especially towards the end, we were living on the edge a bit in terms of one injury could have really hurt us.
“It was an area we identified as needing another body. We wanted to go for someone of quality and that is what we have done by bringing in Elliott. There is going to be competition in every department but our defence definitely needed another centre-half.”
Ward helped former clubs Norwich and West Ham secure a place in the top flight before being used sparingly in the Premier League once they had won promotion in 2011 and 2005, respectively.
He told the Daily Echo: “Just because I have signed here doesn't mean I will be on the team-sheet every week. That is the way it is at every club. You have to work hard for your spot and I have always welcomed the challenge of trying to keep the shirt.”
