WONDERKID Darcy Ward completed a remarkable comeback to win the Danish Grand Prix and then declared: “It was a perfect night.”

Ward - who is next week set to return to Pirates' one-to-seven - claimed his maiden GP victory just days after getting back in the saddle following injury.

The Australian sensation saw off Matej Zagar, close pal and team-mate Chris Holder and Polish legend Tomasz Gollob to take top honours at PARKEN last night.

Having spent seven weeks out due to a broken shoulder blade, Ward was the king of Copenhagen with a trademark display to underline his world-class potential.

Wins in heats five, 14 and 19 saw Ward progress to the semi-finals with 13 points, before he led home fellow Turbo Twin Holder to book a place in the final.

And Ward then held off Zagar and Holder to complete a remarkable return to fitness and form following a tumultuous and injury-plagued start to the campaign.

In an interview with speedwaygp.com, the 21-year-old admitted his injury lay-off had helped him.

Ward said: “I have learned a lot of things since I have been injured. I have been watching the guys and trying to learn as much as I can.

“I probably wouldn't change that crash. When I came back at the start of the year, I was enjoying it, but I didn't feel comfortable in a way. I was still going really well, which I was happy with. I was second in the world championship standings after Bydgoszcz and I was stoked with that. But I think the time off really helped me and I thought about a lot of things.

“I have got to move on, keep doing what I'm doing and just enjoy it. It is such a good life that we have and you have to appreciate it sometimes.

“It has been hard work but I will never forget a moment like this. I am very proud to be here and very grateful for the opportunity I have been given. It is a dream come true and I felt good all night.

“There has been a lot of hype about my name and it was good to finally have the chance to step up here and take a Grand Prix win.”

World champion Holder's third place saw him cut a point out of Emil Sayfutdinov's lead at the top of the GP standings.

Holder told his official website: “I am happy that I am doing what I am doing and the pressure is on Emil a lot too. He's riding well. You can't take that away from him. I can only do what I can do and we will see if that is good enough.”
