CHERRIES are set to honour Ted MacDougall by naming the new South Stand at Dean Court after the legendary striker.

MacDougall has been invited to cut the ribbon on the facility ahead of Cherries' prestigious friendly against Spanish giants Real Madrid on Sunday.

Currently in England planning a tour for his American-based soccer school, MacDougall was Cherries' leading marksman in three successive seasons, firing the club to promotion in 1971 when he netted 42 times in Division Four.

The idea was the brainchild of Cherries chairman Eddie Mitchell, who confirmed the stand would continue to be named after MacDougall even if it were to be replaced by a bigger structure.

MacDougall, who scored 144 goals in 223 appearances during two spells with Cherries, is expected to open the stand at around 6pm.

Meanwhile, goalkeeper Shwan Jalal made a welcome return to action tonight as a Cherries XI recorded a 3-1 win over non-league neighbours Poole Town.

Jalal, who had been nursing a thumb injury sustained during the club's training camp in Switzerland, made a couple of excellent saves before he was replaced by Chad Collins after 63 minutes.

Dolphins defender Lamin Dibba inadvertently headed past his own goalkeeper Nick Hutchings to give Cherries a fourth-minute lead.

And after Jalal had saved comfortably from a Carl Preston effort, Poole went close to levelling when Marvin Brooks found the inside of the post.

Dan Cann lifted a presentable chance over the crossbar before Jalal pulled off a top-drawer stop to keep out a Brooks strike.

Jordan Chiedozie fired wide when well placed, with Jalal producing another excellent save to push Steve Devlin's thunderous drive around the post.

Preston's cool finish restored parity in the 29th minute before Aristide Bassele rounded Hutchings to make it 2-1 after 40 minutes.

Chiedozie completed the scoring when he netted at the second attempt in the 54th minute, while ex-Cherries favourite Mark Molesley, who has been training with the development squad, came on as a second-half sub.

Cherries boss Eddie Howe has confirmed he will take his first-team squad to Woking for a friendly against the Conference outfit at Kingfield on Saturday (3pm kick-off).

Howe told the Daily Echo: “We will be playing two first teams. We are hoping to get higher exposure as pre-season progresses so will be looking to give the players an extended period of time.”

Jalal, Harry Arter and Darryl Flahavan all previously served the Cards, while Jayden Stockley spent time on loan with Woking last season and Jason Tindall played under their boss Garry Hill at Weymouth.

Admission is £8 for adults and £3 for concessions.

Cherries: Jalal (Collins, 63), Jones (Roberts, 76), McCarthy, Cargill, Kaye, Losasso, Wakefield (Fountain, 80), Bayly, (Molesley, 63), Bassele, Chiedozie (Muscke, 67), Cornick (West, 76).
