RIVAL manager Chris Powell took Charlton’s opening-day defeat on the chin before praising Cherries for the “wonderful story” which has unfolded at Dean Court.

Powell, who guided the Addicks to ninth in their first campaign back in the Championship last season, looked set to sign for Cherries under former boss Kevin Bond in 2008.

But despite joining the squad for a pre-season trip to Woodbury Park and turning out in a friendly at Dorchester, the move did not materialise.

Responding to a question put by the Daily Echo about how the landscape had changed at the club in the past five years, Powell said: “It is a wonderful story because they were hurt for many years with regards to points deductions and other things.

“The place looks totally different with the new stand behind the goal and the club has momentum from last season. Coming up into the Championship is exciting for the players, staff and supporters and I wish them well.

“They have clearly got good backing and that will serve them well if things become tricky with regards to bringing in players. I am sure they will be fine this season and I think their home form will be key.”

Powell added: “They have got to be looking to cement themselves in the Championship and then see where it takes them.

“They are going to have dips, every team does in the Championship, because it is a relentless league. It is about making sure you bounce back and get positive results at crucial times. You need to keep everyone together and not panic. I felt we did that pretty well last season and we will again this season.

Eddie Howe and Jason Tindall will get the group of players together and, when things aren’t going their way, they will manage the situation really well.”
