BOSS Ken Vaughan saw Bournemouth Poppies earn an FA Cup windfall and then admitted he had been “pleasantly surprised” to discover the size of the purse for this extra preliminary round tie.

Aaron Corby’s penalty – Poppies’ first goal of the season following three successive Wessex League defeats – paved the way for a 3-1 home win against Hellenic League Highworth Town yesterday.

Second-half efforts from Lewis Burgis and Connor Phillips helped Poppies bank £1,500 in prize money with Terry Bohane netting a late penalty for the visitors.

Vaughan, whose side will host either Hallen or Whitchurch after they drew 1-1, said: “I only found out after the game it was worth £1,500. I thought we might have got about £500!

“Like most clubs at this level, we can certainly do with the money. It will go into the club coffers and will help towards the running costs.”

Vaughan added: “The penalty settled us and we stuck to our guns in the second half and scored a really good second goal. We finished them off on the counter-attack. We are rebuilding and the young lads have done us proud.”
