LIONS chief Budge Pountney says he has been impressed by the club’s players and coaching staff during his first pre-season at the helm.
Pountney, who succeeded David Dunn as Bournemouth’s director of rugby in July, is readying his new team for the upcoming National Two South campaign.
Lions stepped up their preparations with a convincing 52-25 victory over Glamorgan Wanderers in a training match at Chapel Gate five days ago.
And they continue their warm up for the season with a home friendly against Championship outfit Bedford Blues on Saturday (10am).
Ex-Scotland captain and former Northampton stalwart Pountney said: “It is early days yet but I have been impressed by a number of things.
“Firstly, the work ethic of the coaching team has been excellent, plus the support from specialists in the areas of strength and conditioning, sports science and physiotherapy.
“I also like the fact that the players have grabbed their opportunity and created an atmosphere that encourages hard work and persistence, which should stand us in good stead.
“They have a great emotional tie to Bournemouth and they show that with their commitment when they train and play.
“That emotion will help them maintain focus when things get tough in the season ahead”.
Lions’ clash with Bedford will be split into three 20-minute periods and admission is free.
