JAMES Vaughan’s hat-trick condemned Cherries to another miserable awayday beating as Huddersfield put five past Eddie Howe’s men at the John Smith’s Stadium today.
Striker Vaughan became the second player to net three against Cherries this season, following Troy Deeney’s treble in the 6-1 rout at Watford a fortnight ago.
Vaughan, a £1million summer signing from Norwich, notched a first-half double and added to Adam Hammill’s opener as the hosts reached the break leading 3-0.
The 25-year-old, who served the Terriers on loan last season, then made it 4-0 from the penalty spot before Marc Pugh headed home Cherries’ consolation after 68 minutes.
Adam Clayton had the final say for the Yorkshire outfit when he inflicted more punishment on the visitors by bagging a stunning fifth 11 minutes from time.
Tommy Elphick and Andrew Surman were both drafted in as the Cherries starting line-up showed two changes following the 1-0 win over Wigan seven days ago.
Defender Elliott Ward was absent as his wife was due to give birth, while winger Marc Pugh was named on the bench.
Cherries goalkeeper Ryan Allsop gathered a shot from Hammill as the Terriers carved out the first shooting chance in the early stages.
A stinging drive from Simon Francis was charged down by Ollie Norwood after Harry Arter had stepped over Brett Pitman’s corner.
Hammill drew first blood for the hosts when he forced his way into the 18-yard box and poked a low drive past Allsop after 17 minutes.
Despite the early setback, Cherries showed plenty of attacking threat with Ryan Fraser setting up two presentable chances in quick succession.
Firstly, the winger’s accurate cross was met by Pitman, whose overhead kick struck Peter Clarke, before Lewis Grabban saw his header from Fraser’s centre saved by Alex Smithies.
Terriers’ leading marksman Vaughan saw his rasping effort tipped over the crossbar by Allsop after Hammill’s crossfield pass had picked him out.
And from the resultant corner taken by Hammill, Jonathan Hogg’s 30-yard piledriver was acrobatically pushed around the post by the Cherries goalkeeper.
Huddersfield doubled their lead when Vaughan latched on to a cross from Hammill and powered an unstoppable header past Allsop after 37 minutes.
The Terriers added a third goal when Vaughan collected Martin Paterson’s defence-splitting pass and coolly picked his spot past Allsop three minutes before half-time.
Vaughan fired narrowly wide after wriggling into the box at the start of the second half before a Pitman strike was deflected for a corner by Joel Lynch.
Huddersfield were awarded a debatable penalty after Jake Carroll had gone to ground under a Francis challenge in the 58th minute.
But Vaughan showed Howe’s men no mercy when he rammed home the resultant spot kick to complete his hat-trick, despite Allsop getting his fingertips to the striker’s effort.
Substitute Pugh pulled one back after 68 minutes, the winger stooping to head a Francis cross past Smithies.
However, Cherries’ misery was completed when Clayton scored the goal of the game, the midfielder curling a delightful left-foot strike into the top corner 11 minutes from time.
