MANAGER Tom Killick urged Nick Hutchings to learn his lesson after the goalkeeper had been bizarrely sent off in yesterday’s dramatic derby with Weymouth.
The Dolphins boss had no defence for his long-serving stopper after the Poole number one had been dismissed in an incident where he clipped referee Mark Derrien round the back of the head following his 65th-minute booking for time wasting.
The red card stunned everyone in the Tatnam crowd, but nobody was more surprised than Killick who saw his team, already shorn of midfielder Steve Devlin, reduced to nine men before going on to claim a 2-2 draw.
And while Poole’s manager had hoped Derrien would allow the petulant tap to slide, he refused to criticise the decision.
Killick told the Daily Echo: “Perhaps some referees would have let it go. I think I saw a Premier League official squirted with a water bottle the other week without the ref making a lot of it.
“But Nick immediately realised the consequences of his actions. He could have prevented us getting anything from the game and, when you look round at your team-mates in the dressing room, that is often the biggest punishment for a player.
“I would hope the biggest lesson for Nick is that his team-mates were denied victory by what happened.
“It is black and white for a goalkeeper really. Nick will be banned and Dan Thomas will have an opportunity to stake his claim and that could be the biggest consequence.
“But I must say, it was completely out of character. Nick has never had any disciplinary issues during his time at the club and that has to count for something. I am sure no one was more disappointed by what happened than he was.”
