BOURNEMOUTH Outrigger Canoe Club claimed the runners-up position in the annual Round Hayling Island race.
The 14-mile race has been run for windsurfers for many years and was opened up to outrigger canoes and SUP boarders last year.
Outrigger canoeing is one of the oldest watersports in the world and originates from the ancient Polynesian canoes used for transport.
It has recently started to gain popularity in the UK and there are now several events held each year.
Bournemouth Outrigger Canoe Club, formed in 2015, won the event last year and faced several logistical problems in getting to the race but were determined to defend their title.
Their men’s crew finished second after a close race all the way to the finish and lost by less than 30 seconds but still beat their time from last year.
BOCC ladies finished first in the women’s class, beating a mixed crew on the way.
