TAFFY Richardson returned to Poole Town and pledged to propel Dolphins back to National South.

The 52-year-old, who made more than 400 appearances for the Dorset club during a distinguished playing career, has been named assistant manager and first-team coach.

Poole were relegated from National South last season and Richardson – a long-time ally of boss Tom Killick – wants to bring the good times back.

He told the club website: "As a Poole supporter, I felt the hurt that relegation brought and am under no illusions how difficult it will be to gain promotion.

"However, with the special people involved with the club, I believe I can restore a winning mentality and immediately gain the promotion we deserve and crave.”

Richardson has filled the role vacated by Callum Brooks, who became Hamworthy United boss last month.

A non-league legend, Richardson made 1,000 senior appearances in semi-professional football.

Alongside Killick, he was part of the Wimborne Town side which memorably won the FA Vase at Wembley in 1992.

The warhorse midfielder last season made 12 appearances for Cranborne, who finished second-bottom of the Dorset Senior League.

Richardson also had spells at Bashley and Poppies.
