PHIL Simkin described Jack Swann's strike as "a hell of a goal" after the striker helped Hamworthy United see off third-placed Romsey Town.

Hammers had been out of league action for a while due to their FA Cup and FA Vase exploits, so boss Simkin was happy to claim maximum points on their travels.

He said: "We're pleased with it. They've had a good start and wouldn't be third if they weren't a decent side.

"Although we didn't play as well as we have been, we survived a tricky first half and got stronger.

"We went in front round about the hour mark through Jack Swann. It was a hell of a goal but then that's no more than I'd expect from him."

Nathan Walker's header doubled the lead but Hammers had to weather a late storm before claiming the points.

"They put us under pressure in the last 20 minutes but we gave nothing away and were delighted with the result," said Simkin.

The Hammers manager is reaping the rewards of a wholesale overhaul of the Hamworthy playing staff during the close season. He recruited eight new players, one of whom was the impressive Swann.

"It's a massive boost having Jack back. He gives us a new dimension up front," said Simkin.

"He's still not fully match fit but he's gradually getting there and doing exactly what I knew he would.

"He's going to score a lot of goals for us."
