DARREN Anderton led Cherries away from the foot of League One - but insists their latest triumph will count for nothing unless they can build on it.

Anderton captained Cherries to a deserved 2-0 victory at Bristol Rovers on Saturday as Kevin Bond's charges climbed three places in the log.

Goals either side of half-time from debutant loan signing James Henry earned Cherries their third away league win of the season at the Memorial Stadium.

But having seen Cherries fail to capitalise on previous wins at Doncaster and Crewe, Anderton was quick to take a circumspect view of their Rovers success.

He told the Daily Echo: "It was a good, solid performance and, defensively, we were great. It was probably the most comfortable we have looked all season.

"They had one good chance when the striker profited from a lucky bounce but we got into some good areas in the second half and could have buried them.

"But it's only one performance and will be no good to us unless we can follow it up in the coming weeks, which is something we haven't been able to do this season.

"We can say we've been unlucky or whatever, but the truth of the matter is that we are where we are and we've got to put it right."

Ever-present Anderton heaped praise on Reading recruits Henry and Alex Pearce and was also keen to emphasis the role that his team-mates play in helping to accommodate new arrivals.

"The new lads came in and both did very well," added the former England star. "It's not easy coming in on loan and trying to adjust straight away.

"I think a lot of it is down to the group, the players who are already here. I know what it was like when I came in and they all helped me settle very quickly.

"You've only got to look at Jem (Karacan). He's been here a fortnight and it's as if he's been here for a couple of years. That is a credit to him and also to the lads who are here."

Asked for his thoughts on the Reading trio, Anderton replied: "They have got that little bit of quality and do the simple things right and I know that's what it's all about.

"Sometimes at this level, players try to overdo things instead of doing the simple things. Good players do the simple things well and that's exactly what they do."

Cherries' first away win against Rovers since 1995 saw them follow up their 1-1 home draw with Walsall as Bond's charges chalked up points in consecutive games for the first time this season.

Boss Bond said: "In the situation we're in, any win is a good win but I thought it was a good win. The lads performed really well and we deserved it.

"I thought we defended really well and didn't sit as deeply as we had in previous games. The energy levels from one or two were outstanding so that was really pleasing for us as well."
