SCOTT Parker insisted there would be “no shortcuts” in guiding Cherries out of the Championship and added: “It’s graft and it’s hard work.”

The new Cherries head coach confirmed his switch to Vitality Stadium late on Monday night, just hours after finalising the mutual termination of his contract at Championship rivals Fulham.

Former England midfielder Parker guided the Cottagers to promotion to the Premier League via the Championship play-offs during the 2019-20 season.

Asked what the secret was to managing a side out of the relentless second tier, Parker told afcbTV: “It’s cliché but it’s hard work. It’s relentless, it’s hard work.

“The ups and downs and the ebbs and flows of this division and where you pitch yourself psychologically and physically is massive really.

“We need to be ready for that. Of course there is going to be some disappointment this year, like anything in this league you often see it, but we need to prepare for those moments.

“But I think ultimately, like I’ve said many a time and I’ll always say, it’s graft and it’s hard work and being team that are disciplined and are willing to work hard on a daily basis on the training pitch – that will reap the rewards of winning football matches in this league.

“There aren’t no shortcuts. There’s no one name on the team sheet that can go and win the league or you think you’ve got a better squad than someone else – it’s an irrelevance in this league.

“What you need to have is a bit of humility, understand that what gets us out of this league is going to be hard work and that’s what the players will understand when they come in.”

Parker brings with him five members of staff to spark a new era in the coaching structure at Vitality Stadium.

Matt Wells will be assistant head coach, with Rob Burch the club’s first team goalkeeping coach.

Alastair Harris joins as head of performance, while Charlie Moore is lead physical performance coach and Jonathan Hill first team head analyst.

They are set to get to work straight away with just more than a month until Cherries’ Championship opener against West Bromwich Albion on August 7.

Asked what a Scott Parker pre-season would be like, the new head coach replied: “There’s no shortcuts.

“You want success, you want to get out of this division like we do – that’s down to hard work, so it’s going to be a tough pre-season of course.

“But it won’t just be a pre-season which is tough, the whole part of this season will be tough – the players will understand that, of course they will, and the sacrifices we need to make for us to be successful this year will be right up there and we will aim to do that.”
