CHERRIES’ new signing Emiliano Marcondes says he wants “to have the pressure on me” when it comes to taking free-kicks and insists he is "inspired by extraordinary things."

Marcondes, who joined from recently promoted Brentford, scored in the Bees’ play-off final victory over Swansea that sealed their fate as a Premier League team in May.

The attacking midfielder had also scored a wicked curling free-kick, from a tight angle, against Stoke City in the FA Cup in January 2020 – something he and Cherries fans will be hoping he can bring to his new employers.

The Dane delivers free-kick classes to FC Nordsjællanand and their Ghanaian Right to Dream academy, telling the club website: “Free-kicks I have been practicing since I was a little kid.

“It’s something I’ve always liked to train and in games to have the pressure on me in these situations, it’s a nice thing to do and a beautiful goal to score. I have practised a special technique.

“It is about courage and in these situations something I have worked with my mental coach is to not think too much about what can go wrong, but think about what can go right.

“When the ball is up in the air for a bicycle kick just do it, shoot from long range, that’s what I was inspired by from big players when I was growing up, when I saw extraordinary things and beautiful goals.”

Marcondes played for FC Nordsjællanand’s senior side between 2013-17 and scored 37 goals in 112 league appearances.

The Right to Dream academy in Ghana was set up in 1999 and aims to ensure that talented players in areas of deprivation are still given a chance to shine, and crucially the chance to improve.

Following the close of the Brentford season, Marcondes travelled to the African nation to help out.

He added: “It’s something I’ve tried to get down to a couple times but Covid put a stop to that last summer.

“This year I decided before we even got to the playoffs that I’d go down there and do my free-kick class, see the guys and how they’re getting on.

“If I can give something back to the people who have not had the opportunity I have had in Denmark, that will make me happy and hopefully make them happy too.”
