MIDFIELDER Gavin Kilkenny admitted Cherries were “ultimately punished” as they were handed a 6-0 shellacking at the hands of Norwich.
Three goals either side of the break ensured the Canaries hammered Scott Parker’s side and dumped them out of the Carabao Cup in the second round.
Kilkenny played 90 minutes of the clash at Carrow Road and insisted a mix-and-match Cherries outfit would “learn our lessons”.
He told the Daily Echo: “It’s just very disappointing, 6-0 is never a nice scoreline and in kind of the manner it went down, we were just punished ultimately for our mistakes in both halves.
“We had control at times in the first half and even coming out in the second half.
“But against a team of this quality and Premier League quality, if you make mistakes we were ultimately punished. We paid the price.
“It was a young team and we will learn our lessons.”
Ironically, Cherries had more possession against Daniel Farke’s men in Norfolk but costly individual errors heaped misery on a one-sided contest.
“We never really threatened them but they didn’t really dominate the game either,” said Ireland under-21 international Kilkenny.
“They would probably say they didn’t need to because we let them back in.
“They got chances and they scored, they took them. We struggled after that but we kept going, we never got fazed and we just kept going. We didn’t give in.”
