CHERRIES star David Brooks has been diagnosed with Stage II Hodgkin lymphoma.
The 24-year-old went away on international duty with Wales last week, but left early following a medical examination.
It has now been confirmed Brooks has Hodgkin lymphoma and will undergo treatment next week after an initial positive prognosis.
Hodgkin lymphoma is described by the NHS as an "uncommon cancer that develops in the lymphatic system, which is a network of vessels and glands spread throughout your body".
It is said to mostly affect young adults in their early 20s and older adults over the age of 70, with around 2,100 people each year diagnosed.
Exact causes of Hodgkin lymphoma are unknown. The NHS describe the disease as "a relatively aggressive cancer and can quickly spread through the body. Despite this, it's also one of the most easily treated types of cancer."
Brooks has played nine times for Cherries this season, scoring three goals.
But he is now set for a spell away from the game as he looks to return to full health.
Cherries chief executive Neill Blake said: “Everyone at AFC Bournemouth will do everything possible to help support David and his family during his recovery.
“We’re not putting any timescales on his return; we will give David all the time he needs to get well and will do everything that we possibly can to help with that.
“I know everyone will be keen to show their love and support for David which will help him immensely as he recovers, but we also urge you all to respect his and his family’s privacy during this time.”
