BOURNEMOUTH Bears showed their home dominance with a brace of wins against Taunton Rebeldes on Sunday.
Coming into the game with a record of 2-2, the AAA Bears put up 31 runs across two games on their way to two comfortable 15-5 and 16-1 wins at Ferndown.
The first of the day’s two fixtures saw Jose Lopez on the mound for the home team, he struck out eight of the Rebeldes’ batters in a strong performance - picking up his third win of the season.
Lopez was supported by a complete team performance by the Bears’ bats, as the team reached base on more than half of their plate appearances. Seven of Bournemouth’s players recorded two or more hits, with player of the day Williams Vega recording four as well as driving in a run.
Game two was a day of firsts as Marcus Lopes picked up his first strikeout and his first win at the AAA level. Ash Neal also hit the Bears’ first home run of the season and his first in a red and black jersey.
Through three innings, Lopes only allowed two hits and one walk on his way to the victory. James Norman relieved Lopes in the fourth inning, going scoreless in the process.
Alongside Neal’s home run, the Bears’ bats kept up their momentum from the first game. Vega went three for three at the plate, driving in two, Juan Ortega Ramirez took his RBI total across the two games to eight after driving in four more and Carlos Ares drove in his first runs of the season.
The Single A Bears recorded a win and a loss against the Bristol Bats, to move 3-1 for the season.
After putting up two victories against the Bristol Brunels, the Bears returned to Somerdale to play the second of three Bristol teams in their division.
Game one saw the Bears come out of the blocks quickly, scoring five runs in the first inning alone on their way to a 17-9 victory.
Lead off hitter, Simon Schwarz, rounded the bases four times after drawing three walks and stealing six bases.
Stand-in manager Marcus Senior added four RBIs on three hits and was one of three Bears’ batters to double in the first game.
Senior also took home his second win in as many games on the mound, through six innings and 131 pitches he held the home team to 10 hits. He was supported by strong defence, with a double play from Simon Schwarz and Catcher, Mitch Sullivan, a particular highlight.
The second game went to the home side, but the Bears were resilient and made a number of highlight plays in the 12-6 defeat.
Centre Fielder, Alex Frampton, pulled off an excellent sprawling catch in the outfield, whilst also putting up an extra base hit and three stolen bases in the game. Another of the Bears’ new additions, Manuel Baez was excellent at third base, throwing two runners out at first and drawing three walks on as many plate appearances.
But it was Artie Herbert who had the moment of the day, picking up her first hit in a Bears uniform and supporting pitcher, Pete Datlen, with an excellent catching performance.
