NORTHAMPTON Town have signed young defender Sam Sherring from Cherries, the League Two club has announced.

Dorchester-born Sherring came up through the ranks at Cherries after joining as a seven-year-old in 2007, finishing last season on loan in League One with Cambridge United.

Sherring had trained with Scott Parker’s first team ahead of the start of last season, taking part in a pre-season friendly against Granada whilst in Spain for Cherries’ training camp.

Alongside his loan spell with Cambridge last term, the 22-year-old also enjoyed League One football with Accrington Stanley in the first half of the 2021-22 season, as well as spells in the National League with Torquay United and Weymouth.

Whilst with Torquay, he was named In the National League’s Team of the season for 2020-21.

In Cherries’ released and retained list announced in June, it had been revealed that the club had extended the centre-back’s deal for another year.

As such, promotion hopefuls Northampton have had to agree a compensation package with Cherries, with the Cobblers reportedly beating the likes of League One sides Cambridge and Cheltenham Town, League Two outfits Tranmere Rovers and Stockport County, as well as non-league big spenders Wrexham.

Sherring arrives at Sixfields on a two-year deal, with the intention of helping Northampton to improve upon their fourth placed finish last term, a campaign that ended in double heartbreak.

Bristol Rovers seven goal thumping of already relegated Scunthorpe saw Northampton miss out on automatic promotion on goals scored, before Mansfield Town knocked them out in the semi-finals of the play-offs.

Sherring will link-up with his new teammates shortly, travelling up to Scotland for the Cobblers' pre-season training camp.
