BOURNEMOUTH’S Chris Billam-Smith could be on the brink of fighting for the IBF cruiserweight world title – should he win his long-awaited homecoming bout at the BIC on Saturday, July 30.

The man nicknamed ‘The Gentleman’ is set to defend his European and Commonwealth belts against Isaac Chamberlain on the Boxxer promoted show, at the Dorset venue this month.

And now, a dream world title fight against Australia’s Jai Opetaia could be in the reckoning for the winner of the contest, dubbed ‘The Battle on the Beach’.

Opetaia beat Latvia’s Mairis Briedis to seal the world title last month – during which he broke his jaw in two places.

His promoter Dean Lonergan told Sky Sports he would like to “do some business” with the winner of the Billam-Smith and Chamberlain fight.

He said: “We would 100 per cent like to have a look at that. I'm not reaching out to have a chat, I'm reaching out to see if we can actually do some business.

"I'd like to start talking now with Ben Shalom (Boxxer promoter) because they're all signed to him, I believe, and with Adam Smith and to have a serious conversation about us coming there or you guys coming to Australia and trying your hand at what is now the best cruiserweight in the world."

Sydneysider Opetaia has a perfect professional record with 17 of his 22 wins coming by way of knockout.

Asked about the prospect of fighting Opetaia at world level, Billam-Smith told Sky Sports: "He's a really difficult fight for anyone in the division. He is the number one in the world at the moment, only because he's beaten the number one.

"I think there's obviously flaws in everyone but he's really well schooled, does the basics very well. There's nothing amazing about him, he just does the basics very, very well.

"The fights are always going to be hard when you're fighting for a world title especially if you're fighting a champion."

Victory over Chamberlain would extend Billam-Smith’s professional record to 16 victories and one defeat.

His only loss came against Richard Roakporhe on a split decision back in 2019.
