DOMINIC Solanke was once again on target as Cherries kicked off their pre-season schedule with a 2-1 training match victory over Sheffield Wednesday.

Boss Scott Parker played two separate XIs for the first and second halves in the behind-closed-doors game in Portugal.

Lewis Cook’s opener sent Cherries in at the break 1-0 up against Darren Moore’s League One Owls, before Solanke, who fired 29 league goals last season, struck in the 56th minute to double the advantage.

Fisayo Dele-Bashiru pulled a goal back for Wednesday 11 minutes from time.

The Dorset club almost carved out an opening after just five minutes when skipper Lloyd Kelly’s searching ball from deep found the run of Jamal Lowe but he was flagged offside.

Dele-Bashiru then forced a comfortable save from Mark Travers in Cherries’ goal, before the Premier League side saw an effort charged down after smart work from Jordan Zemura and Siriki Dembele.

A superb save from Wednesday keeper David Stockdale then kept the game goalless.

Summer signing Joe Rothwell’s free-kick allowed Kelly to head at goal but he was denied by the experienced keeper.

Cherries did get the breakthrough just before half-time. Cook’s strike from the edge of the box took a deflection off George Byers and fell into the net.

Wednesday almost found a leveller just before the break. Midfielder Barry Bannan’s classy pass found Josh Windass, who forced Travers to push the ball to safety.

With 11 changes at the break, new Cherries recruit Ryan Fredericks was introduced and almost found the net with a low effort which flew just wide.

But Solanke picked up where he left off from last season, having struck the Dorset club’s second goal 11 minutes after being introduced.

After neat work from Jaidon Anthony and Ryan Christie, Solanke turned and arrowed a strike into the bottom corner.

Wednesday did pull a goal back with 11 minutes remaining, however.

Dele-Bashiru won the ball high up the pitch and slotted into the bottom corner past keeper Jonas Lossl.

Jefferson Lerma almost netted a third for Cherries late on but was denied by a fine save from Owls keeper Cameron Dawson.

Parker’s side face Braga in their next training match, behind closed doors on Tuesday.

Cherries first half XI: Travers, Smith, Mepham, Kelly, Stacey, Rothwell, Cook, Zemura, Lowe, Moore Demebele.
