A LATE goal from hosts Braga condemned Cherries to a 2-1 defeat in the final training match of their Portuguese camp.

Cherries had taken a three-minute lead against the Europa League outfit thanks to Dominic Solanke, before goals from Andre Castro and Rodrigo Gomes in either half.

Jefferson Lerma was handed the captain’s armband in the absence of Lloyd Kelly, who started the fixture on the bench, with Chris Mepham and James Hill the chosen partnership at the back.

With a view of spreading gametime around for match fitness, Kieffer Moore, Jamal Lowe and Siriki Dembele, who all started Friday’s win over Sheffield Wednesday, all made way for the aforementioned Lerma, Philip Billing, and Ryan Christie.

Heavy pressure from Rothwell early on saw a panicked Braga make a mistake at the back, allowing Solanke to steal in and round the goalkeeper, burying his second goal in two pre-season games.

The hosts responded relatively quickly, restoring parity on the ten-minute mark.

Midfielder Castro was allowed to try his luck from just outside the area, sending a low shot past Mark Travers and into the bottom corner.

Travers was next called into action mid-way through the first period, with the Irishman spreading himself to deny Al-Musrati one-on-one.

Cherries made no changes at the break, almost finding themselves back in the lead shortly after the restart.

Some nice link-up play between Billing and Christie worked open a chance for Solanke, but the striker was denied by Matheus in the Braga goal.

On the hour mark Braga came close when Iuri Medeiros fired a shot-off inside the box, with the ball smacking the post before bouncing away from danger.

A drinks break partitioned the second-half into two distinct periods, with Cherries taking the pause in the game to change all 11 players.

Little action transpired in the final 20 minutes, but the home side still found time to score a winner.

Hernani picked out Gomes in the Cherries’ box, and the Portuguese youth international made no mistake with his finish.

Scott Parker's men return to the south coast tomorrow, ahead of their first home pre-season friendly against Bristol City on Saturday, July 23 (kick-off 3:00pm).
