CHERRIES legend Steve Fletcher told Scott Parker he would give him “everything” as part of his coaching setup – and was pleased by the boss’s feedback at the end of last season.

Today marks 30 years since the Cherries icon first signed for the club as a player under Tony Pulis, back in July 1992.

He arrived from his native Hartlepool, scoring 121 goals in 728 games across a 15-year spell at the Dorset club.

After spells at Chesterfield and Crawley Town, the forward returned to Cherries in 2009, scoring 15 goals in 135 more appearances.

Having now been part of the staff under various managers, the Cherries icon insisted he was “really happy” working in the backroom staff with Parker.

Asked about being a part of the club under different managers, Fletcher told the Daily Echo: “The first day in training I pulled Scotty to one side and said to him ‘look, I’ll give you everything I’ve got’.

“I did for Eddie Howe when I was a coach under him and I said to Scott ‘I’ll do exactly the same for you, it will be no different. I’ll be your man around the place, I’ll look after the players, I’ll do whatever you want me to do on the coaching side of things, I’m the ambassador as well, so I love the club, I have it at heart’.

“And he said ‘that’ll do me, Fletch’.

“I’m really happy. He pulled me at the end of the season and said ‘you’ve done more than I expected’. So that’s good enough for me.”

Fletcher was part of the coaching staff when Cherries were previously in the Premier League under Howe and assistant manager Jason Tindall.

With a fresh challenge now awaiting under Parker at England’s elite level following promotion, the club hero stressed the need for Cherries to sustain their top-flight status.

“We’re going to enjoy it, but the most important thing is we stay in the Premier League. It’s huge,” he added.

“We don’t want to be a team that keeps going up and going down and going up and going down.

“Listen, don’t get me wrong, it would still be incredible for this football club to do that.

“But if you ask anyone who is involved in this side of things, we want to be in the Premier League to stay, for as long as we possibly can.”

Cherries are set to continue their pre-season preparations with a home clash against Championship Bristol City this afternoon (3pm).
