NEW-LOOK Wimborne impressed with their first home friendly played in front of fans, beating Verwood 3-0 to lift the Steve Moore Memorial Trophy for a seventh time in a row, reports Graham Dunn.
After being kept at bay by Darren Shepherd’s young Potters in the first half, the Magpies turned on the style after the break with Harry Baker bagging a hat-trick.
With the Southern League set to kick-off in 10 days, boss James Stokoe gave a run out to everyone in his squad except Jez Bedford and Jack Hoey who were carrying minor injuries, whilst also having a good look at a couple of trialists.
There was plenty of endeavour in the first quarter of the game, but the harrying and hustling of both teams neutralised the creative flair. Dan Bartlett came close when he was played through the inside-left channel, only to be thwarted by an excellent smothering save by Verwood’s Ed Phillips.
On 36 minutes it was Tom Parker-Trott’s turn to impress the spectators with a diving save just inside his left post from a Verwood free-kick.
The Southern League side began to dominate their Wessex One opponents straight after the restart, taking the lead on 62 minutes.
Trialist B slipped Harry Baker through in the inside-right channel and the striker finished well.
Wimborne’s second goal came on 76 minutes, and had an element of good fortune.
Baker’s shot from Kellaway’s pass appeared to come off his shin but it went in the right direction and ended up in the net.
The third came just three minutes later. That man Baker controlled Lewis Beale’s pass in the centre of the goal area, before he cleverly side-stepped defender and keeper to score.
