ROB Pack was Bournemouth’s last-gasp hero as he smashed rookie Burridge seamer Francis Moore for three boundaries off four final over deliveries to give the Lions a dramatic one-wicket ECB Southern Premier Division win at Chapel Gate.
Chasing a competitive Burridge total of 278-6, Bournemouth appeared to have the run chase in hand at 229-5 with Tasmanian Tom Willoughby scoring a second consecutive home century.
But Burridge, through Moore (3-67) and Alex Damley-Jones (2-45), grabbed four wickets for the addition of only 10 runs as Bournemouth lurched to 241-9, still 38 runs short of victory.
Among the dismissals was the prize wicket of left-hander Willoughby, who had made a splendid 106 (14 fours), two weeks after making a season’s best 113 against Totton & Eling.
The batsman Burridge did not get out was Pack (41no), who proceeded to win the match on his own with two booming leg-side sixes preceding his last over assault on teenager Moore.
“We needed 38 off 24 balls when Dan Conway came in at 11 – he’s got pedigree as a decent bat – so I was pretty confident we’d get home on what was a excellent batting surface,” Pack said.
“We got it down to 12 to win off the last over. Two fours to the cover boundary off the second and third balls of the over almost got us home. Then the lad served up a perfect knee-high full toss off the penultimate ball. Right in the slot!”
Bournemouth’s run chase – on a Chapel Gate pitch Pack reckoned was the best C2 strip he had played on in five seasons – was built around Willoughby’s hundred and a fine 70 by Luke Webb, after which they lost wickets in pairs at 105 and 162.
Earlier, Joe Collings-Wells hit an equally fine 107 (one six and 14 fours) as he continues to stand in for skipper Hilio De Abreu, who is sidelined with a painful bicep tear.
Collings-Wells enjoyed a fruitful opening stand with Jack Paskins (33) before a century partnership with Azim Chowdhury (47).
