EDDIE Howe and Joe Roach masterminded a memorable 1-0 triumph over Combination rivals Bristol City last night and then lavished rich praise on Cherries' young guns.

Cherries started with no fewer than nine youth team players - together with trialists Adam Smith and Matt Halliday - against a vastly-experienced Robins outfit at Ashton Gate.

And despite coming under the cosh, the Bournemouth Babes heroically weathered the storm to sink the divisional leaders thanks to Martin Slocombe's second-half own goal.

Howe said: "I emphasised the importance of working hard and thought we were excellent in terms of attitude, commitment and team spirit.

"I told them that if they could play well against such a strong side in this arena then they could handle the first-team environment. Playing against the likes of Lee Trundle can only stand them in good stead.

"They are learning all the time and have come on leaps and bounds. That's credit to Joe and the work he does. They deserve a big pat on the back."

Howe, who saw Cherries lose 7-1 to City in September, added: "They know they are close to the first team and the carrot is there for them. If they keep doing the business, they are only going to get closer. They need to be ready and hopefully they will be if they get their chance."

Victory capped a productive few days for Roach, who saw six youth team players on duty against Yeovil, while his weakened Youth Alliance team maintained second spot with a win over Bristol Rovers on Saturday.

Roach said: "I was surprised at how well they did but they were more than good value for the win. Ryan Pryce was different class and, collectively, they were a credit to themselves with their attitude and the way they went about their business."
