CHERRIES were left to rue the woodwork and a fine goalkeeping display following their narrow defeat at the hands of the Grecians at Chapel Gate.
City stopper Nathan Keast was in inspired form, while Matt Kemble and Jamie Davidson hit crossbar and post respectively after James Ware had netted for the visitors.
But after fielding three schoolboy trialists and no fewer than 10 under-16s, Cherries coach Brian O'Donnell was delighted with their performance.
"They played some great football in horrendous conditions," said O'Donnell. "Although we went a goal down, I felt we dominated the first half and had some great chances.
"Their goalkeeper pulled off a couple of great saves to deny Danny Ings and James Queree and made a fantastic save from Tom Hill in the second half."
O'Donnell added: "Exeter were strong and physical and came primarily to win the game. We want to win as well but we want to win in a certain manner and with a bit of style."
Cherries: Thomas, Annetts, Queree, Harris (Magookin, 79), Newton, Green (Kemble, 67), Hill, Burbidge, Carpinelli (Wilson, 67), Ings, Davidson.
