A LOT has changed since Cherries’ last trip to Brentford, but there will be one air of familiarity on Saturday.

Since Cherries were beaten 3-1 in west London in a dramatic Championship play-off semi-final second leg in May 2021, the stadium has changed name and Cherries have had three different managers.

But the two clubs are set to go head-to-head again, this time as Premier League clubs this weekend, with Australian referee Jarred Gillett selected to officiate.

It will be the first time Gillett has refereed a Cherries game since that play-off clash, which saw him issue six yellow cards, as well as send off Chris Mepham and award a penalty to the Bees for a handball by Lloyd Kelly.

The penalty decision in particular drew ire from Cherries, notably captain Asmir Begovic and boss Jonathan Woodgate.

Speaking after the game, Begovic said of the penalty call: “I’ve never spoken about referees but this is a shameful decision.”

Shortly after that game, Gillett was promoted up to the Premier League list of referees and has been officiating in the top flight since the start of last season.

Gillett will be assisted at Gtech Community Stadium on Saturday by Simon Long and Harry Lennard, with Andre Marriner operating as video assistant referee for the fixture.
