GARY O’Neil says Neto is “fantastic with all the players” as he explained his decision to give the Brazilian the captain’s armband at Brighton.
With skipper Lloyd Kelly absent due to a calf injury, goalkeeper Neto took the armband for the first time since joining Cherries from Barcelona last summer.
It was an eye-catching move, given Adam Smith, who normally takes the responsibility in Kelly’s absence, was also part of the starting XI at the Amex. The 31-year-old has led the team out on 12 occasions this season.
Asked why goalkeeper Neto was given the armband at the Amex, O’Neil told the Daily Echo: “I think Neto is a leader.
“He’s fantastic with all the players.
“He’s a good guy. I like what he brings. It was just Neto could lead the boys on Saturday.”
Cherries lost 1-0 thanks to a late Kaoru Mitoma header.
