FORMER Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Jermaine Jenas believes Cherries “deserved everything they got” in north London on Saturday, labelling Dango Ouattara’s late winner “payback”.

In October, Cherries led Spurs 2-0 in the reverse fixture at Vitality Stadium in October, only to go on and lose 3-2 to a stoppage-time winner from Rodrigo Bentancur.

On this occasion, Gary O’Neil’s men battled back to lead 2-1, but were pegged back on 88 minutes through former Cherries favourite Arnaut Danjuma.

But there was time for a late sting in the tail for the hosts, Ouattara popping up with his first goal for the club in the final seconds to secure a 3-2 victory.

Asked what was key to Cherries’ win, as they ended Tottenham’s five-match winning home league run, Jenas said, speaking on BBC’s Match of the Day: “Belief. They played with a freedom.

“Gary O’Neil has got Bournemouth playing in a way that Spurs fans would love to see their team playing. He went to White Hart Lane with no fear.

“You knew from the off, that even though they went a goal down, they had belief in the way that they played and the way that Gary has actually got them playing.

“They had a lot of time on the ball. They started to grow into the game.

“I always got the sense that they were going to get something out of this game, I really did.

“He’s going to a team that are chasing Champions League and he’s gone ‘you know what, we’ll press them high, we’ll be able to take the ball off this lot, they’re not that good’.

“They didn’t actually believe that Spurs were that good, and they were right. They got their rewards because of how they played.

“Then, right at the end of the game, when they’d just conceded and it came down to who wanted it more, (Dominic) Solanke beats Pedro Porro in a 50-50, a real bit of quality from Ouattara and that was payback.

“That was payback for the goal they conceded in the last minute in their (home) game.

“They deserved everything they got (on Saturday). I thought they were absolutely brilliant and he set his team up really, really well.”

Jenas played more than 200 games for Spurs, between 2005 and 2013.
