BOTH of Bournemouth Bears’ sides had mixed fortunes over the weekend with both a win and a loss from their respective double headers.
The Triple-A side beat Herts Cardinals 5-3 at Ferndown, before losing their second game 7-6.
Pitching ace Daniel Myrmell kept the Cardinals in check in game one, giving up two runs in four innings pitched.
After trailing by one run for four innings, the Bears’ bats came to life in the fifth and the home team scored four runs to take the lead.
Jose Lopez then took over on the mound, punching out the victory 5-3 for the Bears with five strikeouts in the final three innings.
Game two became a fierce pitcher’s battle. After putting up early runs, both teams went scoreless as Lopez duelled with Herts starter Tyler Cote until the sixth inning.
Lopez struck out nine Cardinals while the home team struggled to gain traction off Cote’s pitching.
A long home run from shortstop Roger Cedeno wasn’t enough for the Bears, who finished with a narrow 7-6 loss.
Bears stay second in the league with a 4-2 record.
The Single-A Bournemouth Bears travelled along the coast to Wide Lane in Southampton to test themselves against the New Forest Thunder Knights.
The New Forest team immediately showed their strength in game one when centerfielder Alex Frampton hit the first pitch from Bournemouth starter Marcus Lopes out of the park.
The Bears responded by putting up eight runs, but couldn’t hold back the New Forest bats in the final inning, and were defeated 9-8.
Determined to leave with their heads held high, Bournemouth battled for game two. Plate discipline and smart baserunning earned the Bears eight runs.
Bears rookie Oluwatamilore Ogunseye showed off his speed, stealing three bases, including home. Determined defence held the home team to six runs, with Lopes recording an out even while colliding with a baserunner.
The 8-6 win moved the Bears to 5-3 on the season.
On Sunday, the Triple-A Bears host the Essex Redbacks at Ferndown Leisure Centre.
