MARK Travers is undergoing a medical at Stoke City, ahead of a loan move from Cherries, the Daily Echo understands.

Stoke were one of a handful of Championship clubs who had been linked with a move for the Irishman.

There had been some suggestion Travers could leave on a permanent deal, but it is understood the move will only be temporary, with Cherries planning to welcome the 24-year-old back next season.

Travers, who joined Cherries as a teenager in 2017, enjoyed his big breakthrough campaign in 2021-22, as first choice under Scott Parker in the Championship.

The talented stopper missed just one league game all season as Cherries clinched promotion. He went on to win a host of individual honours for his performances, including the Daily Echo/Micky Cave supporters’ player of the year trophy.

He was rewarded with a fresh five-year contract last summer.

But Travers, who has previously spent time out on loan at Weymouth and Swindon Town, found game-time hard to come by last term.

Following Parker’s dismissal in August, new boss Gary O’Neil dropped Travers for new signing Neto, who went on to establish himself, becoming captain and signing a new three-year contract.

He was keen to head out and play regularly this season, with Stoke looking like his destination.

Cherries have had recent dealings with Stoke, notably selling them Ben Pearson earlier this summer, and loaning out Gavin Kilkenny to the Potteries last season.

Travers, who has three senior Republic of Ireland caps, is set to compete with Jack Bonham for a starting spot at Stoke.

Cherries are set to replace him with Romanian Andrei Radu, who is close to completing a loan move from Inter Milan.
