POOLE Pirates captain Steve Worrall described as a “dream come true” winning a wild card spot at next month’s British Speedway Grand Prix.

The 31-year-old was competing at the 16-man British Final at Belle Vue on Monday night, with the winner of the event knowing a spot in Cardiff awaited.

Dan Bewley retained his British title with a dominant victory, but Worrall’s second-placed finish in the final still ensured him a wild card spot, as Bewley is already a Grand Prix rider.

Fellow Pirates star Richard Lawson also reached the final, but crashed out at the back, with Ben Barker taking third place.

Worrall will now head to the Principality Stadium to take on the world’s best on Saturday, September 2.

Speaking to Eurosport about booking his place in Cardiff, Worrall said: “It looks like it. Good job I didn’t buy any tickets yet!

“It’s a dream come true.

“As a British guy, obviously not British champion, but second place and a trip to Cardiff. So I can’t complain.”

Worrall had reached the grand final of the British Championship three times before, placing fourth in 2016 and 2020 and second in 2017. He was listed as a track reserve for the Grand Prix in Cardiff in 2016, but did not get a ride.

Looking ahead to the upcoming event at Principality Stadium, Worrall said: “I’ve been there as reserve before, in the one year nobody actually did anything and I didn’t get a go!

“So I’m looking forward to it.”

Worrall is set to lead Pirates out against Redcar Bears in the SGB Championship tomorrow (7.30pm).
