DARCY Ward said it was a “joy” to return to Wimborne Road last night, for the first time in seven years.

Aussie Ward entertained Poole Pirates fans between 2010 and 2014, notably as part of the explosive ‘Turbo Twins’ partnership with Chris Holder.

Disaster struck for Ward in 2015 while riding in Poland, suffering injuries after a crash which would leave him unable to walk again.

Ward watched on, alongside club owner Matt Ford, as Pirates beat Redcar Bears 52-38 in the SGB Championship.

The 31-year-old spent time in the pits and on track with his son Charlie, as well as being presented to the fans on the centre green.

“It’s a joy to be here,” said Ward.

“It’s nice to spend some time with Middlo (Neil Middleditch) and Matt and everybody that was involved here. I’m just here with my family and enjoying my time.

“I was at the World Cup (in Poland) with team Aussie and Monster Energy, so that was a blessing being part of that.

“I’ve been struggling with the weather, it’s been tough!”

Discussing Ward’s Wimborne Road return, Danny Ford told the Daily Echo: “Darcy truly is a Poole legend and that gets probably thrown around quite loosely.

“But anyone who is a speedway supporter and was able to come during 2010 to 2014 would know what he was capable of and how absolutely fantastic him and Chris Holder were together.

“It was probably the best time in Poole’s history, in terms of the actual racing you’d see and maybe the best partnership there has even been in British speedway.

“To be able to have him back at Wimborne Road was fantastic, especially after so long. He got a great reception, saw a lot of old friends and had a great chat with everyone. It is very well deserved and it was great to see him.”

Ford added: “I remember my dad saying multiple times during that era, people need to come and see this because there will never be a partnership like this. He couldn’t say it more clearly. I think you kind of take those things for granted and think it’s going to last forever and it never does.

“We obviously all know what happened to Darcy in 2015 with those life-changing injuries. It was so unfortunate. That was probably one of the most naturally talented speedway riders in history’s career cut short unfortunately.

“He’s living a very fulfilled and great life over in Australia with his family, so I’m glad he has made the most of his situation and it was great to see him.”
