CHERRIES defender Amber Treweek believed her side played the game and not the occasion during their 4-0 win over Portishead Town.

6,805 fans watched on as Cherries’ women team returned to Vitality Stadium, their third fixture at Dean Court ending in a comfortable victory.

The result leaves Cherries top of the National League Division One South West, having won all nine of their league fixtures to date.

Treweek, who featured in a 0-0 draw with Maidenhead United the last time Cherries played at Vitality Stadium, played 85 minutes as her side recorded a fourth clean sheet of the campaign.

Speaking after the game, the 20-year-old told the Daily Echo: “It was a good game.

“We came into this game knowing we needed to win and that's exactly what we did.

“That was our main objective.

“We knew it was going be an event and everything, but we wanted to win.

“We want to keep our good streak going.

“We did that. We could have been more clinical.

“I think we could have strung together some passes a bit better, but we came away with the win.

“So we're happy.”

Maisy Smith’s opener on 11 minutes followed a significant spell of pressure from the hosts, who quickly doubled their lead through Gemma McGuinness on 26 minutes.

Late on in the second half Helen Bleazard and substitute Chloe Gilroy made sure of the result.

Discussing the first goal, Treweek continued: “It definitely gave us some momentum and you could see it when that second goal came.

“It had been coming for a while.

“But it's just nice to get some goals at the stadium, really.”

Cherries are next in action when they welcome Bridgwater United to Long Lane in the FA Cup.

Having already beaten Bridgwater in the league and League Cup, Cherries are hoping to reach the second round of the FA Cup for just the second time.
