CHERRIES defender Abby Jones described her side’s FA Women’s Cup triumph away at Swindon Town as ‘massive’.
History was made as goals from Gemma McGuinness and substitute Chloe Gilroy turned a 1-0 deficit around to a 2-1 win at the County Ground, Cherries reaching the third round proper of the FA Cup for the first time.
Jones played the full 90 minutes against Swindon, donning the captain’s armband after skipper Gemma Hillier was substituted.
Speaking to afcbtv, Jones shared: “Massive game for us.
“Going 1-0 down in the first half was really demoralising. I’m not sure about the penalty, but we know that we can definitely be better.
I don’t think in the first half they had any shots expect from the penalty. We were all over them, we had about four or five chances we should have scored, but didn’t really hit the target.
So coming in at half-time, we were really disappointed. But we knew that as a team, we could work together and be better.
“That’s something that Steve (Cuss, head coach) said and something we said in our huddle before we started the second half.
“Definitely, we gave it our all, and I think that showed in the result today.”
McGuinness has proved a star turn since arriving from Ireland in the summer, the 28-year-old restoring parity in Wiltshire.
Gilroy came off the bench to complete the comeback in the 92nd minute, with Jones praising both her teammates.
She continued: “One of the goals was obviously Gemma (McGuinness), and she’s come in for us for this season, amazing player.
“And the other one, was someone who hasn’t really played all the minutes that she probably would have liked too.
“Probably would have been on the bench most of the time, but really came on today and her moment, scored a goal. Really important day for Chloe (Gilory) and the team as a whole.
Despite only being 20 years of age, Jones is into her fourth season as part of the first team set up at Cherries.
Named vice-captain in the summer, Jones was part of the side that lifted the Hampshire Senior Cup last term.
“It’s a big achievement, definitely smiles on everyone’s faces, not just mine,” Jones replied when asked were the accomplishment ranked.
“Been at the club seven years now, and to be in the third round of the FA Cup is really important to us.
“And to be maybe drawn away to a Championship team in the next round would be good.”
