HAMWORTHY Recreation’s maiden FA Vase run came to an end after six games, with the Wessex League Division One outfit losing on penalties to Jersey Bulls in the fourth round.
After an early start, leaving their Magna Road base at 6:30am in order to fly over to the Channel Island of Jersey, it was Rec who scored first.
Chris Long bundled home the opener, only for the hosts to restore parity three minutes from time through substitute Ruben Mendes.
In their first year in the competition, Rec pushed five teams to the wayside on route to the fourth round, dispatching fellow Wessex League sides Fawley and Bournemouth Poppies in the qualifying rounds before defeating Bovey Tracey, Fairford Town, and Wells City.
In contrast, Jersey entered the competition at the second round stage, beating Holyport and Harefield United to set up the tie.
Clear cut chances were at a premium in the first half, although Rec were the more creative of the two sides.
Long went on a mazy run that saw him beat three Jersey defenders, but his eventual effort was an easy hold for Piere Roche in the Jersey goal.
Frank Rosenwald tried his luck from range, but was unable to find the target, whilst the hosts went close via Lorne Bickley firing wide.
Rec would open scores seven minutes after the break.
Tyler Rudd’s cross into the box caused more than enough danger, Long fastening onto the loose ball to fire past Roche.
With just over 30 minutes to go, Jersey poured forward in search of an equaliser. It would eventually come minutes from the final whistle, substitute Mendes sending the tie to penalties.
Jersey keeper Roche would prove the hero, stopping Long and George Deem’s spot-kicks to allow the Bulls to advance 4-2 winners from the shootout.
