MAGNUS Zetterstrom has joked that Pirates should consider using him in the Elite League Best Pairs competition because of his scintillating form at Swindon this year.

The charismatic Swede has twice got double figures and helped inspire Poole Castle Cover to successive big league wins at Blunsdon in the last two months.

Zetterstrom, aiming to lift his first Swedish title at MasarnaAvesta today, plundered 12 paid 13 in a 51-39 triumph in Wiltshire on May 22.

Zorro helped himself to another impressive 10 paid 11 haul as the Dorset side hammered Swindon 51-42 on Thursday.

The Scandinavian, called up by Pirates in place of out-of-form and injury hampered Karol Zabik in early May, said: "I enjoy riding at Swindon.

"I even said to their team manager Alun Rossiter on Thursday that whenever they need a new rider let me know. I would love Blunsdon to be a home track!

"Of course I was only joking but it's been working out well for me there this season. I've got a good set-up for it and thankfully it has helped Poole win there twice, so I'm happy."

All Pirates fans know that Zetterstrom has only ever had one British club true to his heart since he first arrived at Wimborne Road in 1996.

That will always be the case. So they need not worry that Zorro - who famously cried with emotion when he captained the club to title glory in 2003 - is about to jump ship.

But because he's impressed so much at Swindon, and also been such a revelation for Poole this term, he joked: "Maybe Chris Holder and I could have a run-off on the morning of the Elite League Best Pairs at Swindon on August 17!

"Then team manager Neil Middleditch could pick the rider he wants to go into the event alongside Bjarne Pedersen for us."

Zorro might be jesting, but it's not such a far-fetched scenario as he could, on current form, feasibly help the Dane retain the trophy he won with then team-mate Jason Crump at King's Lynn last term.

Looking ahead to his assault on the Swedish Final tonight, Zetterstrom said: "I have good form going into it.

"I got 13 in Poland on Sunday, 17 on Tuesday in Sweden when I beat Leigh Adams three times on my home track at Kumla, seven at Poole on Wednesday, then paid 11 at Swindon on Thursday, dropping only one.

"It's been a very good week so hopefully I can take that into the final.

"I've only ever finished fourth twice in the Swedish final and I'd dearly love to get on the podium.

"If I could win it, that would be the icing on the cake.

"But I know it's going to be very tough with the likes of Andreas Jonsson, Jonas Davidsson, Peter Karlsson, Antonio Lindback and Freddie Lindgren also in the line-up."
