AFTER scoring some dramatic winning goals of their own in recent weeks, Cherries found themselves on the other side of a late setback at Kenilworth Road.

Leading through a fine Marcus Tavernier strike, Cherries fell to a 2-1 defeat to Luton Town, with Carlton Morris bagging a last-minute winner, after Jordan Clark had equalised.

Here are some talking points from Cherries' first Premier League loss since February's reverse against Manchester City.

Semenyo kept quiet

ANTOINE Semenyo terrorised Luton when the two sides met just last month. The Hatters could not handle the Ghanaian, who cut in from the right and smashed in two goals to seal a memorable comeback 4-3 win at Vitality Stadium.

But he was kept relatively quiet at Kenilworth Road.

With Tavernier taking up a spot on the right wing, Semenyo shifted over to the left and was regularly doubled up on.

Daiki Hashioka had a tough evening at Vitality Stadium, substituted shortly after the Semenyo made it 3-3. But, alongside wing-back Issa Kabore, he largely quelled the threat of Semenyo this time around.

Speaking after the game, Luton boss Rob Edwards revealed special attention had been paid tactically to trying to stop the danger coming from Semenyo.

Edwards told the Daily Echo: “We did. That’s why we kept Issa Kabore on the last line, rather than playing him up one.

“So Hashi was up one, Issa on the last line for speed. So we kept Burkey (Reece Burke) and Teden (Mengi) and Teden was playing on the left rather than in the middle, so we had speed on the outside to deal with that.

“I thought we actually nullified him fairly well. He’s a brilliant player and that was a key thing in terms of our gameplan from an out of possession point of view.

Hatters win midfield battle

The Lewis Cook and Ryan Christie axis has been such a big reason behind Cherries’ fine season.

But the midfield duo came off second best against the Hatters on this occasion, particularly during the second half.

Yorkshire duo Cook and Jordan Clark were in direct competition all afternoon, the latter producing a brilliant performance.

Clark capped his fine display by smashing a loose ball in the box into the bottom corner, for his first ever Premier League goal. The 30-year-old would later be announced as the sponsors’ man-of-the-match.

Meanwhile, Christie spent much of his afternoon chasing after Ross Barkley. Barkley has been one of Luton’s key men all season and he again stood out, with a dominant midfield display.

The performances of Barkley and Clark were undoubtedly key to Luton’s success on the day.

Good fun from the stands

There was plenty of back and forth between both sets of fans and from some players to the supporters throughout the afternoon.

Cherries and Luton have undoubtedly built up a stronger bond this season and much of it was good natured, started early by the travelling fans reminding Luton of their capitulation in the reverse fixture.

That would come back to bite them at full-time, as Hatters fans took great joy in pointing out Cherries let their one-goal lead slip on this occasion.

Tavernier also saw both sides of the coin. Some home fans felt he was wasting time whilst being treated for his hamstring injury and whilst walking gingerly around the pitch as he was substituted, he smiled and mocked the home supporters.

As the Cherries winger made his way off down the tunnel at full-time, his smile had turned into a wry one, as the home fans chanted: “Tavernier, what’s the score?”

With Cherries 1-0 up, there were chants from the away end of “we’re all going on a European tour” as well as a nice moment with Illia Zabarnyi.

Fans sang their new chant for the Ukrainian, to the tune of Whitney Houston’s ‘I Wanna Dance with Somebody’, Zabarnyi looking back to the terraces and applauding.
