WIMBORNE player-manager Christer Warren was left to rue two defensive mistakes as they gifted battling Hayling a point in a 2-2 draw.

Magpies - one of the teams tipped to seriously challenge for the title - dropped two more points following this draw and are firmly entrenched in 14th spot with only four from three games.

Steve Whitcher gave Wimborne a 1-0 lead inside 30 minutes but they fell 2-1 behind before Dan Cann rescued a point with a 70th-minute equaliser.

Warren, whose side had beaten Dawlish 3-2 in the FA Cup three days before, said: "We were our own worst enemies.

"We gave away a silly back pass, which was short, for their first goal and Alan Walker-Harris came out and brought the bloke down and they scored from the penalty.

"Also, we were sloppy defensively for the second one as they went 2-1 up.

"Steve produced a good finish to fire us in front and Dan cut in from the left and produced a good finish with his weaker foot to make it 2-2.

"But we made changes because of the two games in days. Obviously the changes shouldn't really have disrupted the team.

"To be fair, I couldn't see Hayling scoring. It was only through mistakes by us again that they scored.

"We had a very good defence last season but we've conceded too many goals already this term, so I'm looking for improvement in that area.

"That's not just with the back four. It's from all the players in front of them as well."

Warren has named the same squad for their home league clash against Christchurch today (3pm).

Wimborne Town: Walker-Harris, P Smith, Percival, Hall, Phillipson-Masters (Cann), S Arnold, Green, Warren, Whitcher (James), Gibbons (Joyce), Stokoe. Unused subs: Jones, S Smith.
