BOSCOMBE Cliff survived a real scare against Wimborne who won on two rinks with one shared.

The Cliff's only winning combination was that of Michael Hutley, Charlie Munden, Mike Squires and Chris Daniels who won on the day with a 32-11 return to give a final total of 92-81.

Leading Minster skip Phil Lawrence (27-22) restricted the Cliff's points haul to nine points with a last end pick-up of five shots.

Alexandra Park have not given up the chas. This was underlined by their resolute performance at Bournemouth where they won 86-57. Top Alex skips Steve Chalker (21-11) and Alan Miller (25-15) ensured maximum points.

The result left Bournemouth looking over their shoulder at Southbourne who collected 10 points from Knyveton Gardens (82-78). It could have been 12 had Gardener's skip Eric Sole (20-19) not collected 15 shots over the last six ends.

Branksome Park bounced back up the table thanks to a solid performance from Paul Tidby's rink (30-9) ensuring a 10-4 (87-65) victory over Ringwood.

Relegated Lymington found visitors Poole Park too strong when going down to the Lakesiders on three rinks (97-61), Bob Atkins' rink (28-5) inflicted most damage on the host club.

  • The rescheduled match between Alexandra Park and Wimborne was played on Sunday and resulted in a 12-2 win for Alex which leaves Boscombe Cliff needing nine points from their last two matches to take the championship title.

SECTION TWO

WITH both leaders New Milton and Fordingbridge losing on their travels, the chasing pack might now have a foot in the door.

New Milton lost out 12-2 on the East Cliff as Tony Geary, John Morris, John Cave and Bob Sprules (22-10) laid the foundation for a Boscombe Cliff A victory (96-76).

Fordingbridge returned from West Moors with the dreaded "nil points" as Dave Paget, Charlie Leonard, Mike Burfield and John Riddington (21-15) claimed star billing for the hosts.

Branksome Park proved to be the only successful travellers, winning 8-6 (73-70) at Wessex. Hoever, the efforts of Branksome's Reg Chick, Roger Owen, Richard Cooper and Tony Matthews (29-7) were probably too little too late as their team look favourites to join Iford Bridge in the drop.

Iford lost on three rinks at Pelhams ( 98-69) while Electric's 10-4 (74-70) win over Braeside should ensure safety for the Sparkies.

SECTION THREE

THE top three - Southbourne A, Richmond Park and Kings Park - all suffered a touch of the heebie-jeebies.

Even with a healthy (30-17) success by Paul Turner's quartet, Southbourne lost 10-4 (94-80) at Highcliffe thanks to Graham Stride, Trevor Welch, Brian Smith and Eric Snook's (32-10) reply to Turner's score.

It was a similar story on the West Cliff as the effort of Richmond Park's Craig Paterson (29-14) proved insufficient as Argyll ran out 10-4 (84-75) winners with top honours going to Clive Bunford's squad (28-11).

Kings Park returned from Christchurch with just two points, losing (84-65) as Richard Reeks, Bob Holt, Brian Graham and John Bishop (26-12) gave the Priorites a glimmer of hope in their relegation battle.

The wily Eric Jones inspired Les Blackmore, Gordon Allen and Fred Wiseman (29-16) and Redhill Park to victory (76-71). The result moved them into the promotion frame after sharing rinks with bottom team Wessex A.

Swanage gave an emphatic performance by trouncing Moordown 13-1 (85-61).

Ted Curtis, Mike Keats, Dave Billington and Bernard Sutton (27-16) delivered the Purbeck punch to leave Moordown one place above the relegation zone.

SECTION FOUR

THERE were no nerves in this section as table-toppers Knyveton Gardens A and Poole Park A secured their lead with 10-4 victories.

The Knyveton Gardens win came at the expense of early title contenders Swanmore as Frank Thom, Trevor Smith, Bob Coombes and Peter Frampton (28-14) stamped the Gardeners' authority on the game (79-74).

Poole Park A shared the rinks with West Moors A, but Alan Hardy, Peter Martin, Mike Jones and Alec McKenzie's (29-12) total proved decisive in the final count of 93-65.

Braeside A earned a 12-2 success after proving too strong for Ferndown (82-66). Pat Day's quartet scored a match-winning (26-14) which enabled Braeside to climb to a relatively safe position.

Milford-on-Sea slipped into the drop zone after losing at home to Wimborne A (83-80). Peter Laundon's rink (27-19) gave the Minstermen a lifeline after their 10-4 victory.

New Milton A's win over basement club Poole Park B (101-73) lifted them to fourth from bottom with main plaudits going to Bob Sheperdley's squad (28-15).

SECTION FIVE

BOSCOMBE Cliff B are section champions and seriously dented Bournemouth A's promotion hopes after winning on all rinks (93-70). Ricky Chapman, Basil Phillips, Tom Dally and Derek Pavey (31-17), claimedg top honours for the Cliff.

Another maximum saw Ringwood A slip into the second promotion position after inflicting Redhill Park's 13th defeat of the season (112-70). Brian Tester's glory boys led the Foresters home with a 32-6 success.

Southbourne B are still two points from safety following their 11-3 victory at Richmond Park (80-76). Derek Chapman's rink (24-13) spurred on the Towermen.

Kings Park are two points off a promotion place after losing at home to Pelhams A (74-82). Bob Goodman's foursome (26-10) assured the Kinson club of 10 points.

Knyveton Gardens A shared rinks with visitors Highcliffe A but Mike Luker, Barry Atkinson, Ron Hazel and Graham Davies (23-12) swung the match to Highcliffe's advantage (75-69).

SECTION SIX

THE top-of-the-table clash resulted in West Moors B securing an 11-3 win over leaders Argyll (75-68). Inspiration for West Moors came from Les Irvine, Richard Phillips, Bert Sadler and Peter Brown (20-10).

Branksome Park B and Swanmore A both kept in touch with the leaders after recording 12-2 victories. Branksome Park romped home 93-73 at Ferndown (93-73). Geoffrey Shand, Tony Wade, Martin Goss and Wally Barker (30-17) were the pick of the visitors' three winning rinks.

There was a closer match at Swanmore (77-68) where Spence Spring, Geoff Harradine, Colin Brooke and Gordon Parker (26-17) covered Lymington's top score of 25-16.

The Southbourne C 13-1 success over Wimborne B was not reflected in the shots total (81-72). Derek Millet's top rink score for Southbourne was only 19-15.

Iford Bridge A look likely to be the strongest side in the league as they will holding up the rest!

On Saturday they suffered a 102-55 home thrashing at the hands of New Milton B.

Brian Levy's 20-18 rink score was the only bright spot of the day for Iford.
