FOOTBALLERS sometimes receive demi-god status during their spells at clubs – but others are consigned to the history books, quickly forgotten about.

Hundreds of players have represented Cherries to varying degrees of success, for every standout star a transfer flop who failed to make an impact during their time at Dean Court.

We have selected a few forgotten faces from recent seasons to test your powers of recall when it comes to lesser-known AFC Bournemouth stars.

Injuries are part and parcel of the game, with some players seemingly cursed by bad luck when it comes to issues.

Ryan Fredericks’ two-year stint at Bournemouth ends this summer, with the right-back robbed of a season due to injury.

Another player who had a two-year spell at Cherries impacted by injury was Mohamed Coulibaly.

The winger arrived from Swiss outfit Grasshoppers ahead of Cherries’ first season back in the Championship in 2014, but would go on to make just seven league appearances.

After 14 weeks out injured, Coulibaly was loaned out to Coventry City midway through the season to help gain match fitness, but that temporary switch was cut short due to personal reasons.

Coulibaly largely trained with the development squad, finish the 2014/15 season on loan at Port Vale.

At the end of that season, Coulibaly was released, joining Racing de Santander in the Spanish third tier.

He now plies his trade in the Swiss fourth division with SC Dornach.

Roger Boli was another player from Africa to make just seven league appearances for Cherries.

Whilst Coulibaly was a free transfer, Boli cost Cherries £100,000 to sign from Dundee United.

The Ivorian-born French under-21 international arrived with pedigree on the south coast, having won Ligue 1’s golden boot award in the 1993-94 season.

Even when he arrived at Cherries in 1998, he was fresh off the back of being named in the PFA’s second division team of the year for his performances with Walsall.

Having struggled with injuries in Scotland, another issue ultimately ended his career in the summer of 1999.

Two years later Boli would go on to have a benefit match with his former club Lens, where he took on French stars such as Zinedine Zidane, Marcel Desailly, Patrick Vieira, and Eric Cantona.

(Image: Lee McClean)Emerson Hyndman arrived at Cherries on a free transfer from Fulham in 2016 but never managed to make his way into Eddie Howe’s first team plans.

In three-and-a-half seasons with Cherries the American found himself out on loan more often than not, spending time with Rangers and Hibernian in Scotland before returning to his homeland with Atlanta United, initially on loan.

By the time he joined Atlanta permanently, Hyndman had only made eight senior appearances for Cherries.

Now 28-years-old, the two-time USA international currently plays in the American second tier with Memphis 901.

Once dubbed the next Messi, Juan Iturbe joined Cherries on an initial loan with a view to a permanent move.

Cherries paid AS Roma £1.1million for the loan midway through their first Premier League season, with the chance to make the move permanent for £16million.

However, two substitute appearances in the league and two FA Cup starts indicated that the Paraguayan international failed to impress whilst on the south coast.

As such, he returned to Roma, where he stayed until 2018.

The winger now plies his trade for Cerro Porteno in Paraguay.

(Image: Andy Orman)Carl Pettefer is a name familiar to most in the local non-league scene, the midfielder a stalwart for many years during Poole Town’s most successful period.

The former Portsmouth and Exeter man then went onto Wimborne Town and Shaftesbury, but he briefly played for the biggest club in the county.

After impressing on trial during pre-season ahead of the 2008/09 season, Pettefer signed a rolling contract with Cherries.

First-team football under Kevin Bond was limited, with the midfielder making just two appearances for a total of seven minutes.

Pettefer would drop into non-league with Bognor Regis months after joining Cherries, before enjoying five-year spells at AFC Totton and Poole Town.

Another loan signing on the wings that did not quite pan out, Morgan Rogers arrived in the summer to bolster Scott Parker’s playing squad as Cherries hunted promotion from the second tier during the 2021/22 season.

By the time Cherries reached the second transfer window of the campaign, they required further reinforcements, with an influx of further loan signings.

That meant each week Parker had to leave a loan player out of his team, which ended up being Rogers.

Bizarrely, although it seemed apparent that Rogers would not be getting much game time Manchester City did not recall the winger, leaving him to kick his heels for half a season.

All of Rogers’ 17 appearances in a Cherries shirt came before the end of the January transfer window, with the winger starting just three games – and only once in the league.

After impressing with Middlesbrough at the start of last season, Aston Villa swooped for the 21-year-old.

He then played the full 90 minutes of Villa’s 3-1 win over Cherries in April, scoring against his former employers.

Rogers’ fellow loanees Leif Davis and Ethan Laird play just 15 and six times respectively.

England veteran Gary Cahill played 22 times in the first half of the season before being dropped from the starting XI for the rest of the campaign, whilst fellow free agent Robbie Brady made seven appearances.

Orjan Nyland also arrived on a free, but would make just three appearances before being released midway through the season.

Having conceded six on his debut against Norwich City in the EFL Cup, the Norwegian keeper did manage to recover and keep a clean sheet against Hull City four days later.

After one more game in the FA Cup, a 3-1 win over Yeovil Town, Nyland was released after Cherries drafted in further goalkeeping cover in the form of Freddie Woodman.

Of course, Woodman’s one and only appearance would come in the infamous 1-0 FA Cup defeat to Boreham Wood.

Do you remember these former Cherries? Are there any more obscure names you can recall?
