HAMWORTHY United began their FA Vase campaign well with a 3-1 win over Warminster Town.
Warminster travelled to Hamworthy with both sides in the same level in the FA structure, but with United looking favourites for the win over a side that sits in 17th in the Toolstation Western League Division One.
The Hammers were strengthened for the first qualifying round of the Vase by the return of Lewis Sainval in defence and opened the scoring on nine minutes after a cautious start.
Neemo Nixon was fouled needlessly in the box as he moved away from goal, seeing his ankle clipped by Sam Roberts.
Bailey Rowe made no mistake from the spot, driving home into the bottom left corner.
But Hamworthy weren’t leading for long, as home ‘keeper Sam Moggeridge slipped as he came out to deal with a long ball over the top, giving Jack Newman the easiest of finishes.
The Hammers went close to regaining the lead on 26 minutes as Nixon’s cross was cut out by a defender at the far post before Josh Malpas could get the finishing touch.
It was just nine minutes later that Hamworthy retook the lead with a quality goal from Rowe once again.
Louis Bragginton was found in space, who picked out Malpas on the right, with his run leading to a low cross that was fired home off the near post by Rowe.
The home side had the game all-but won two minutes into the second half.
Moggeridge in the Hammers goal found Callum Streamer, who then found Malpas on the right.
His delivery across the box took out the ‘keeper, with Nixon running in from the left finishing from a tight angle.
Town continued to make a game of it, but their three shots from distance didn’t trouble Moggeridge, and United saw out the game.
Hamworthy travel to Fleet Town in the second round of qualifying on Saturday, September 21.
