ANDONI Iraola revealed his tactical tweaks as Cherries mounted an extraordinary comeback to beat Everton, despite trailing 2-0 after 87 minutes.
The Basque manager made two lots of changes, bringing on Luis Sinisterra, Alex Scott and Dango Ouattara on 66 minutes, before Dean Huijsen and Adam Smith came on after 77 minutes.
Ten minutes after the final changes for Cherries, Antoine Semenyo pulled one goal back.
Then, five minutes later, Lewis Cook levelled the game, before Sinisterra headed home to complete the remarkable turnaround six minutes into stoppage time.
Speaking to the media after the game, Iraola was asked what needed to happen to change the momentum of the game.
“I think we needed something to happen because it's true that I was feeling that physically we were finishing strong with the subs, with Antoine, Tav[ernier],” he said.
“I think they were starting to make the difference, one versus one.
“But probably it was too late and we needed something to happen to really start to believe and also to make them fear a little bit because they were think they played very well and they had the situation under control most of the game.
“Once we scored the first one, probably this has changed.”
The Bournemouth boss was asked what he told his side to change, saying: “We always ask them to change things, especially when you are losing.
“Sometimes [they] work, sometimes [they] don't work. But I don't feel like I've done amazing substitutions.
“I put Dango left back and then something has happened from that, no, no.
“I think it's 99 per cent merit of the players, of the change of attitude, the willingness to revel in front of a difficult situation and this spirit that they scored 2-2, and go quickly and they have another chance and then Pickford makes a save.
“They keep pushing and believing and making everyone feel like they are going to do it. And this is everything from the players for me.”
Iraola’s tactical changes involved targeting Everton’s right side, giving Ouattara license to push forward.
“I changed Dean and Adam to improving this build up, also to Dean because he's very good on the ball to take more advanced positions to try to push the left side with Dango, Sini, Justin [Kluivert] after,” Iraola explained.
“I think Ant personally has assumed some leadership, some duels, some ball carrying, some ruthlessness, I would say.
“After, Justin was very tired, I think we needed some energy in the number nine position and Sini has been able to give us this.”
He added that while Kluivert was very tired at the close of the game, he was able to stay smart and put in good deliveries for his teammates, with his cross being the one that Sinisterra scored the winner from.
