SAM Hagon said the key for Pirates was to salvage every point they could in the Championship Grand Final as they chipped away at the 12-point first leg deficit.

Hagon was part of the Poole seven that overturned the deficit to win the title by ten points on aggregate, winning the second leg at Wimborne Road 56-34.

Reflecting on his emotions after the meeting, Hagon told the Daily Echo: “Obviously, it's very high at the moment.

“Obviously not the best of meetings for me, but I think it was an improvement.

“That's obviously what you want.

“To come from twelve behind, it's an unreal feeling. Obviously, there was chance we couldn't do it and it did take us a few heats to get going, but we pulled it off and it was good.”

After a dramatic start to the meeting, with each of the first three heats going to re-runs, Hagon said the message in the Pirates camp was to stay on and salvage every point they could.

“[You want to] get the heat advantages when you can,” he said.

“Obviously, we got a bit unfortunate in a couple, but so did Oxford, if you think about it.

“We got unfortunate there [at Oxford in the first leg]. They had the better pick of gates and they were the better riders on the night.

“The only time when Tom [Brennan], Ben [Cook] and Richard [Lawson] have a bad meet, it's all in the final.

“So obviously it's when we needed to step up and I couldn't step up and a couple of us didn't, but we got the win.”
